Family Involvement

While at Tapestry, family involvement is always welcome.

Geographic distance sometimes makes it difficult for families to be physically involved in treatment, therefore, we arrange for family sessions through telephone conference calls. At other times, when family conferences are wanted or warranted we will arrange for family sessions by phone or in person.

Historically, family members of those with eating disorders have not always felt welcomed or involved in the recovery process, and was in large part due to the misperception that all eating disorders are in response to family dysfunction; that the family has caused the illness and is to blame. Research has shown that genetic vulnerability and the impact of traumatic events and social pressures are more significant contributors than previously understood. Although the exact relationships are complicated, family relations are frequently part of the illness but it is an oversimplification to state that they have caused the disorder. Treatment at Tapestry recognizes the importance of exploring family relationships and, without assigning blame, how they have been affected by your illness or may how they may have contributed.

We feel that a family support system is needed in the recovery process.

Unfortunately, without proper education and support themselves, families seldom know how to help. Therefore, we will work with you to repair and enhance those relationships while in recovery, and we will work with your family so that they may learn how to be part of your recovery.
