What Causes Depression?
Depression can be triggered by a life crisis or physical illness, but it can also develop over time and/or occur spontaneously. Mood disorders like depression tend to run in families, be caused by trauma, and emerge during difficult life circumstances or major life changes. They also affect the way your brain works and cause the chemical composition of your mind and body to change.
People who struggle with depression often have other medical conditions, as well, or develop depression as a side effect of a medication they are taking. Certain illnesses, like hypothyroidism, can also mimic depression. Further, depression is frequently linked to substance use disorders; 21% of adults battle addiction and depression together in a conditions known as a co-occurring disorder.
To effectively treat depression, you will need to focus on the source and function of the depression. .
At Tapestry, we understand that depressive disorders have multiple sources, so we focus our personalized treatment plans on comprehensive, in depth, individualized care.

Common symptoms of depression include:
- Loss of interest in all activities
- Lack of enjoyment in hobbies
- A persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
- Changes in appetite
- Insomnia or oversleeping
- Changes in weight or relationship with food
- Feeling slowed down or agitated
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Physical aches and pains
- Suicidal thoughts or intentions
A depressive episode can make it impossible for you to get out of bed and even take away your will to live.
